It didn’t take much to destroy Andy Nocera’s seemingly perfect life—just a quick bathroom tryst at an Interstate rest area. Tom Mendicino’s Probation deals with the aftermath of his unfortunate indiscretion: Andy’s sentenced to probation, thrown out of the house by his humiliated wife, and spends weekdays working as a traveling salesman and weekends at his mother’s house, where no questions are asked.
In order to clear his record, the state of North Carolina requires that Andy complete one year of therapy without another arrest. At first, he is resistant to the idea, unwilling to contemplate why he was willing to risk everything for a quick fling in a public restroom. As he finally starts to rethink his past, he begins to understand why he never had the courage to live as an openly gay man. When he gets the opportunity to rescue another lost soul, Andy discovers he has the unique chance at a future that’s different from the one he had always envisioned…
This sharply written, often hilarious and deeply touching debut is an excellent portrayal of one man’s search for love, acceptance, and truth. It’s a terrific story about what it means to let go and genuinely live your life.

For all of us who have learned the married life (nor inebriation nor religion) couldn't save us from being who we are, Tom Medicino's "Probation" is a stunning depiction of what was inflicted, what we endured and what we learned in that funny, painful and rewarding journey to authenticity. His tale of Andy Nocero is full of hunor and yet excruciatingly complete in showing the slow progress from self-hatred and self-destruction to inner peace--a peace that is not perfect because he must be truthful and this is life. Been years since I've enjoyed a book as much, and the only sad part is that we all have to wait to see what this great writer comes up with next.
