Murder in the Garden District

The fifth book in the Chanse MacLeod series is a hardboiled mystery that ranks with author Greg Herren’s very best. Murder in the Garden District revolves around the murder of a leading senatorial candidate. The politician, who happens to be a scion of a Louisiana political dynasty, is found shot to death in his Garden District mansion. Who should be the prime suspect but his gorgeous (and significantly younger) second wife, a mysterious woman with a notoriously checkered past?

Detective Chanse MacLeod is quickly on the case, but he soon discovers that nothing in the politician’s life was what it seemed. It isn’t long before he finds out a secret about the state’s first family that somebody will happily kill to keep.

I love Mr. Herren's books. They have fascinating characters but his style makes an easy relaxing read. The ending actually surprised me.

Loved It!!!

Chanse finds himself trapped in a dangerous game of New Orleans high society politics gone deadly wrong, were secrets are kept within the family and taken to the grave. Wendell Sheehan is found dead by his powerful and influential mother, Cordelia and abused wife, Janna, (a woman from a poor family). Chanse is hired to prove that it was someone else responsible for Wendell?s death, not Cordelia, because no Sheehan will spend one night in jail. Evidence goes missing from the police station. Ginevra is on her way, too soon after Katrina, and Chanse is driven back to smoking, (disappointing). If it wasn?t enough for his life to be threatened by his job and Mother Nature, Vinnie make his return to New Orleans. Without the help of Abby, Chanse would not be able to solve this one on his own. She is a true delight to the novel. Everyone?s emotional walls come crumbling down with the devastating approach of Ginevra, and some may never return. (I did miss the love and sex that is normally found in most of the Big Easy novels I've read. But, this book did not need it!) Chanse will have to come to terms with his mother, and hopefully move on into the next romantic relationship chapter of his life.
