She Always Knew How

“When I’m good, I’m very good,” Mae West quipped, “but when I’m bad, I’m better.” She certainly lived up to that claim. A performer since childhood, she debuted on Broadway in a play she wrote herself entitled Sex. It was a smashing success…until it was raided for immorality and she was jailed for 10 days. That, of course, only added fuel to her already blazing career, and she went on to become one of Hollywood’s most colorful (and often off-color) icons—a camp idol of untrammeled sexuality and a titan at the box office.

In She Always Knew How, biographer Charlotte Chandler draws from personal interviews to perfectly capture West’s inimitable voice and sassy attitude. It’s the quintessential portrait of a true Hollywood legend.

And bad too. It's all material derived from the author's supposed interviews with Ms. West. It's just paragraph after paragraph of quoted material strung together with the occasional sentence or paragraph by the "biographer". Ms. West ends up sounding like a one-dimensional caricature which perhaps she was but this book does not illuminate anything real about her life.

ms west is a one act persona, without much depth or range of talent. she was brave and gutsy and ahead of her time in breaking the victorian sex code. this is her major strength and the best reason to read this book.

How boring and inconsequential can a "biography" get? The author chose to use mostly first person quotes from Mae West to flesh out te book instead of doing real research. And the quotes are so repetitive! DON'T waste your time or money on this book. I am going to donate mine to some unlucky recipient.
