Anything Goes

A sexy tell-all memoir a day keeps those blues away, don’t you think? And it’s tough to think of a hotter subject for such a book than actor John Barrowman. From the BBC to Broadway, this out-and-proud thesp has made waves, turned heads and earned accolades. The Olivier Award-winning star of such shows as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard and Stephen Sondheim’s Putting It Together, he’s also become a hero to sci-fi fans worldwide as Captain Jack Harkness, the defiantly un-straight leading man of the hit Dr. Who spinoff Torchwood.

Now, this hot Scottish import is baring all in Anything Goes, the story of his life as an actor, gay man and up-and-coming icon. From coming out to ending up on top, learn how this boy made good!

Incredible story....
March 13, 2010

John Barrowman is a multi-talented performer who never forgets his roots, either in Scotland or in Mid-West America. He treats his fans with dignity and respect, doing what he can for them, as they are the ones who got him to where he is now. This book is just the beginning and gives great insights into his beginnings in theater and TV, and is continued in his next book, 'I Am What I Am'. They are both funny, sad, irreverent, and poignant. I loved every moment of each of them, and after listening to John read this book, I can hear his voice while reading it as well. I just wish I could see John live to feel the energy and vibrancy he seems to exude, even in the written word. With the help of his sister, Carole, John's personality comes across the page clearly and honestly. He is someone who doesn't feel the need to hide who he is, and while some may not like that, it's a breath of fresh air, as others in John's position have hidden who they are and deny some of the more basic tenets of their personality in order to fit in with 'regular society'. I am a fan of John's and always will be, despite the fact that I don't have access to most of John's TV appearances and live shows.

Fun Behind the Scenes Romp
April 08, 2009

Originally bought this for my boyfriend who knew John from the Aurora/Pressbury days and both of us are HUGE fans of Dr Who and Torchwood (which we were able to catch on BBC in Mexico!!). Fun to read the whole story and follow his track up the ladder. A very enjoyable read and hope there is lots more to come from him in the future!! Cheers.

To bad John's married - I think I coul've taken him home to meet Mom.

Having my own personal theater experiences, I enjoyed the rapidity with which John reached success with `seemingly' little effort; the male version of being discovered at the soda shop! It also doesn't hurt that his picture is probably in the dictionary under "eye candy". My only regret is that as an American we don't access to most of John's TV apperances and concerts.

Not a Star Yet!
October 17, 2008

Having seen John Barrowman in "Sunset Boulevard" with Betty Buckley in London. Watched both films, Night & Day" with Kevin Kline and Mel Brooks's Musical screen version of "The Producers" and not seeing his british television series hardly makes him a "Star." The snipets and off the collar remarks were a little egocentric. He is a talented young man who has happened to be lucky and in the "right place at the right time." This hardly makes for an autobiography. He is not a Lance Bass nor a Greg Luganis who both in their own right are "SUPERSTARS" who came out for various reasons. If he was an Oscar, Tony, Grammy winner and came out on televison at the awards show it would have been a more interesting read. This books makes him sound like another queen who is bragging on how he made it. It's probably a good thing that his sister (who is an english professor) helped him write it. It's not worth the money to buy this book. I am glad I ordered it in my introduction package to ISO.
