Pass, read the first three again
March 13, 2010

The first three books in the Maximum Ride series (The Angel Experiment, School's Out Forever, and Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports) are among those rare works capable of captivating young and old alike. The action is seamlessly blended with a thoughtful, well-executed plot that binds not only the individual stories, but the trilogy as a whole. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enter "The Final Warning". --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This sequel has none of the appeal or even consistency of the rest of the series. The characters quickly become parodies of themselves. The plot, while definitely sci-fi in the first three novels, abandons any semblance of reality and plunges headlong into the absurd for no apparent reason other than to make room for marketable sequels. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Worse than this is the book's painfully obvious agenda. Whether you agree with the author's stance or not is beside the point, the convoluted storyline would be hard enough to get into without the added feeling of being in the middle of an extremely loud and poorly-conceived protest. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personally the number of positive reviews (as of this writing, average 4 out of 5 stars after 137 reviews) mystifies me. I think this has more to do with residual good will after having read the previous novels, each of which is easily a 4 if not a 5, than with this book's merits. My advice would be to read the first three again, this one isn't worth the price of admission or the time you'll waste plodding through to the utterly disappointing finale.

Excellent Series 1-4

This book was great. I was disappointed because after I finished this book, there wasn't another to start. I'm glad that I read these books, because I was sceptical at first. Excellent!!!

What a disappointment
February 13, 2009

The first three are excellent and I recommend them to everyone. However this one was just plain lousy. It felt like a rush job written for the sole reason of selling books, not because Mr. Patterson had a story to tell. Way too much soapbox preaching and the plot was contrived and confusing. I really hope the next one(s) are better, it's such a shame for a great series to have a book like this one in it.
