For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow Is Enuf

Renowned playwright, poet and novelist Ntozake Shange presents her critically acclaimed play in book form. From its inception in California in 1974 to its highly acclaimed critical success at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater and on Broadway, the Obie Award-winning for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf has excited, inspired and transformed audiences all over the country. Passionate and fearless, Shange’s words reveal what it is to be of color and female in the twentieth century. First published in 1975, here is the complete text, with stage directions, of a groundbreaking dramatic prose poem written in vivid and powerful language that resonates with unusual beauty in its fierce message to the world.

Love it

Before the movie I didnt even know this book existed. After watching the movie, I couldn't wait to purchase the book so I could actually take my time and really take the poems in. This book was lovely. Especially the one Loretta Devine recited in the movie called "Someone Ran Off With All My Stuff".

I've had this book since 9th grade-'90/'91 and i've been a lover of it ever since!!! to see a story that i love (and can relate to) on screen was nothing short of brilliant! i'm a reader/writer, not a "movie watcher", so this was truly a treat for me. Thank u Ntozake Shange for the cake and Tyler Perry for the icing! :)

Deep

I was able to see the movie and it was deep and moving. The words sunk into every women's deepest thoughts and especially her precious heart. Just by mere words/words are poweful in every way. I deeply recommend this book or the movie to every young woman regardless of color. Soul Searching, Puertorican Woman

Better Than the Movie
November 14, 2010

The long title points you to the theme. The rainbow of women who take turns telling their story and realize they are one and the same. When they stand alone, they are damaged by their bad choices and other people's. When they embraced what is good inside, they become the rainbow that makes life worth living -- even through the darkest times. This themes, I believe, is lost in the movie. Read the book and see the true genius of Ntozake Shange's early work.
