Detours

Meet Joel Patterson. By rights, he should be the happiest man in the whole wide world. After all, he’s just returned from a glamorous two-week vacation in London, where he met the handsome Philip, who very well might be the man of his dreams. How long ago that seems now. Instead of riding through life on a cloud, Joel is instead heading to Maine for his mother’s funeral.

In Jeffrey Ricker’s Detours, Joel finds himself abruptly quitting his job in order to fulfill his mother’s final request: namely, to unload her albatross of an RV by delivering it to an old family friend—all the way out in California.

Somehow, Joel’s high school “friend” Lincoln has invited himself along for the ride, and into Joel’s bed. The other person who’s invited herself along? The ghost of his mother, who still has plenty to say about her son’s judgement (or lack thereof) from beyond the grave.

Joel has to get the RV to San Francisco, get rid of Lincoln, and get back to Philip. It would also make him happy to find out what’s keeping his mother tied to this earthly plane—and how to snip it! However Joel manages it, the road ahead is anything but straight and narrow….

It would make a good movie

DETOURS is a delightful book and would work quite well as a movie. It was a fun read from the beginning to the end.

One of the worst selections I have gotten this year. Contrived plot, little excitement, plodding and just plain awful.
