Chulito

Set against a lively South Bronx neighborhood and the ferocious queer youth culture of Manhattan’s piers, Chulito by Charles Rice-Gonzalez is the coming-of-age (and coming out) story of a sexy, tough, hip-hop-lovin’ young Latino man and all the colorful characters who live on his block. Chulito (translation: “cutie”) is just one of the guys, beloved to everyone in his ’hood, from the clerks at the local bodega to the owners of the corner Chinese restaurant to the guys who hang out on the streets all day. Everyone has watched the boy grow up.

Carlos is Chulito's best friend. At least, he used to be before they hit puberty and people started bullying Carlos and calling him “gay.” That was too much for Chulito to deal with. He subsequently rejected Carlos, burying his feelings for him and becoming friends with Kamikaze, a local drug dealer.

Everything changes shortly after Carlos comes home from his first year of college and the two old friends wind up sharing a secret kiss. Now Chulito must question what it means to be a man, to be macho and to be in love. This funny, heartbreaking novel is vivid, sexy, utterly fearless and destined to become a gay modern classic.

A Good Read
November 25, 2012

Gives a good glimpse into the thug lifestyle which if foreign to most of us. Still we all can relate to that first love, peer pressure and the oppressiveness of the closet.

Chulito is a Fine Book!
February 24, 2012

This book is extremely well written. I was glad to have a glimpse of urban hispanic culture, but most of all I was impressed with the manner in which, through his growing love for Carlos, Chulito very gradually came to understand and accept his own gayness.
