While intermittently flirting with the handsome straight patient in the neighboring hospital bed, Reeve deconstructs every peak and valley of his life, inadvertently shedding light on over 50 years of the gay American experience as he recounts long-lost friends, ex-lovers, and life’s myriad disappointments. Much of the book centers on his troubled relationship with Tom Slater, a professor who battled McCarthyism in the Fifties only to commit suicide once his homosexuality was discovered. A nimble balancing act of jet-black humor and searing insight, the novel paints a portrait of a genuine survivor. It’s a masterful accomplishment, and a worthy addition to any library, gay or otherwise.
