Justin Crockett Elzie became the first Marine to ever be discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Later reinstated, he made headlines worldwide by challenging DADT with a Federal Court Case, eventually going on to serve four years as an openly gay man. In Playing by the Rules, Elzie shares his journey of self-discovery, beginning with his formative years growing up on a farm in Wyoming, joining the Marine Corps as a young man and eventually discovering an underground gay subculture within the military.
Described by his superiors as an exemplary Marine with two meritorious promotions, he was named “Marine of the Year” and spent a respectable stretch of time serving as an American Embassy Guard. Coming out did little to curtail his accomplishments: He was soon after recommended for a promotion, serving as a Platoon Sergeant in charge of Marines on a ship and in the field.
Later, he testified at the Senate Hearings opposite General Schwarzkopf and participated in the MTV show “Free Your Mind.” He was even photographed by Richard Avedon for The New Yorker. Playing by the Rules is the gripping tale of one man’s hard-won acceptance—by his parents, peers and the Marines.
