Gypsy Boy

In Mikey Walsh’s unforgettable memoir Gypsy Boy, the author reflects on his highly eccentric upbringing: both his father and grandfather were champion bareknuckle boxers in England’s Gypsy community, but Mikey never had any interest in fighting. Despite being proud of his heritage and loving his mother and sister (and even his father, who could be callous and abusive), as he grew older he realized he had a secret that would never be accepted by his family: he was gay.

Mikey never went to school, seldom mixed with non-Gypsies and the caravan became his world. The often dark subject matter of Gypsy Boy is offset by Walsh’s sharp sense of humor and wildly stylistic flair: In glowing prose bursting with hilarious asides and plenty of 80s pop culture references, this book reveals what life is really like among the Romany Gypsies. Their culture is a world quite apart from our own; a world that is paradoxically more criminal and more puritanical in equal measure.

A #1 Sunday Times bestseller in the U.K, this is a deeply moving and wonderfully written story; a one-of-a-kind memoir about a culture most of us know very little about—a culture that's equally fascinating, mysterious and misunderstood.

I enjoyed the book but felt how he discovered he was gay, how he acted upon it, and the reaction of friends and relatives to it could have been developed and told more in the book. It was to much of a "fast read" for what the subject was.
